The Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary is the first jaguar preserve in the world and a premier site for jaguar conservation. Located in the Stann Creek District, it spans over 128,000 acres of rainforest in the Cockscomb Range of the Maya Mountains.

 

Belize has a rich tapestry of languages reflecting the diverse cultural heritage of the country. Belize is home to many fascinating Mayan ruins! Here are some of the most notable ones:

  • Caracol: Located in the Chiquibul Forest, Caracol was once home to over 140,000 people and is known for its impressive pyramid, the Canna (Sky Palace).

  • Lamanai: Situated on the New River, Lamanai is one of the longest continually-occupied sites in Mesoamerica, with notable structures like the Mask Temple, High Temple, and Temple of the Jaguar.

  • Xunantunich: This site features the iconic El Castillo pyramid and offers stunning views of the surrounding area.

  • Altun Ha: Known for the discovery of the famous Jade Head, Altun Ha is a relatively accessible site with well-preserved structures.

Belize is quite the linguistic melting pot! The official language is English, making it the only Central American country with English as its official language. However, you'll hear a fascinating mix of other languages too:

  • Kriol: A widely spoken English-based creole language.

  • Spanish: Commonly spoken due to the significant Mestizo population.

  • Mayan languages: Including Q'eqchi', Mopan, and Yucatec Maya, spoken by the indigenous communities.

  • Garifuna: Spoken by the Garifuna people, it’s a unique blend of Arawak, Carib, and other influences.

  • German: Spoken by the Mennonite communities in Belize.
